I know. I know it looks crazy that I, Ioannis Kouiroukidis of all people, listened through a whole Harry Styles album. Well, I did. There is not a single album that I’ve talked about on this website where I didn’t listen through the whole project at least two times.

I’ve always seen Harry Styles all over my Instagram feed. Whether it would be people posting about him on their stories or a big publication like Complex posting about his new outfit, Harry Styles has been in the limelight for some time now. His third album, “Harry’s House” was a massive commercial success, reaching #1 on the Billboard 200 charts and selling 521,500 units in its first week.

So on one random day in December I decided to sit down and listen to the album in full. From start to finish, twice. Here’s what I wrote down in my notes after listening…

So the album started off with a high-tempo “funk” kind of sound with “Music For a Sushi Restaurant” which I liked. I’m always open to new types of music (the world is too big to only listen to one genre) and I found myself bobbing my head a couple times during this listen. One thing I didn’t find myself doing during this listen was being completely shocked/truly amazed by any of the tracks on here. With MAYBE exception to either “Little Freak” or “As It Was”. I think the project in general lacked a true identity or a purpose, but from what I’ve read Harry is known to keep his themes and concepts mysterious and up to fan interpretation. I’ve said this on here before but for me, your favorite music is what you best relate to or see yourself in and I can’t say I do either with this album.

I’d say my favorite song was “Little Freak”. A song about a previous relationship that didn’t go to plan and I think he was taking accountability for what happened.

“I disrespected you… jumped in feet first and I landed too hard”

Despite saying this, he’s not feeling jealousy or disdain against this former partner. He just is saying how they are on his mind. More so this is a song about reminiscing but letting go at the same time. Coming to terms about how things went down.

“I’m not worried about where you are or who you will go home too”

Grapejuice was a TOUGH listen for me. I listened to every single second of this album but I ALMOST skipped that song. It was the most stereotypical “Pac-Sun” or “H&M” song with horrible production. 

I wouldn’t see myself ever going back to listen to the full album, but I would let those two songs in the “Great” section play if they came on shuffle. This isn’t my typical “style” of music but I’m glad I gave it a chance. This is YSN, until next time, signing out.
