Drake – Certified Lover Boy Review

Drake – Certified Lover Boy Review

Let’s call this, the Drake cycle.

Step 1: Drake drops an album

Step 2: People calling it “mid” or saying “I miss the old Drake” all over twitter.

Step 3: People start to walk back their takes after playing the album again. Songs start to trend all over social media (Instagram, TikTok, & even Twitter).

Step 4: After the album has been out for 2+ years people start calling the album a classic.

Final Step: Repeat the cycle once Drake drops again.

It’s like clockwork. This man is arguably the biggest artist in the world, and somehow people still try to disrespect his name at all costs. If you are still disrespecting Drake’s catalog in 2021 then you clearly haven’t heard “Cameras/Good Ones Go Interlude“. Please silence yourself and relax.

“Like how they tellin’ me I’m done, when I’m in my prime? They’ve been tryna push a narrative since ’09.” – Drake, The Remorse.

Drake dropped his sixth studio album “Certified Lover Boy” on September 3rd. The album consisted of 21 tracks, with no leading singles. And of course, it still did massive numbers. Since it’s release, the album has already surpassed a billion streams on Spotify, had a song go platinum (Knife Talk), and has sold over 1.1 million units. The album was #1 on the Billboard 200 for three straight weeks since its release. Commercial success is never going to be a question with Drake, as this was his 10th project to go #1 on Billboard. Drake is really the pioneer of the singer/rapper for this era and it has shown on all of his projects. Classic songs from “Jaded” to “Champagne Poetry” just show his unbelievable versatility. The album is just Drake feeding into the narrative. Even from the album cover, to the “Way 2 Sexy” video, he’s playing with his listeners. He’s going along with the “corny” jokes and showing everyone that no matter what he does, it’s going to succeed. Drake is about to turn 35 years old in 16 days and he’s out here still running the game.

“When I signed my first deal, that shit came through a fax. That should let you know how long I been out here runnin’ laps” – Drake, No Friends In The Industry

Rating: 9/10

You know how this is a 9/10? I still listen to songs 1-17 on this list almost daily. The top 10 songs that I put on my list are undefeated songs. Drake really knows how to put together a body of work. “Expensive Pain” and “Life Of A Don” are in constant rotation now so reviews will be coming at some point either this month or next month. 2021 has been great to us music wise. Drake, Kanye, Meek Mill, Don Toliver, Rod Wave, Lil Baby & Lil Durk, J. Cole, and YoungBoy have all dropped. And there is possibly more on the way. Y’all know the drill…

This is YSN, until next time, signing out.
