You must’ve lost your whole mind if you thought I was going to put that man’s album cover as the picture for this article. If you want to see what the cover is, by all means, please look that up when you’re not around anyone. Please. However, we have some real music to talk about. Let’s get into it.
The fourth installment of the self-titled series by one of Canada’s greatest has finally arrived. Just like Bryson Tiller, this album arrives after a four year hiatus from releasing a full-length project.
Besides a few college campus concerts a year and the occasional rare feature (see Members Only on Drake’s latest album), the man not only took a Break From Toronto, but a break from the whole industry (pun intended). And while his music may suggest otherwise, Party (born Jahron Anthony Brathwaite) seems to be someone who prefers keeping to himself instead of the fame.
“I know Drake and people always tell me, bro, you have to come out more,” Party told Billboard in a March interview. “I’m an introvert, I’m shy.”
When you think about Party’s music, you can definitely tell that most of it is very personal to him. In his 2020 album, “PARTYMOBILE” the track “SAVAGE ANTHEM” is about taking accountability for not treating his ex-girflriend, fellow artist Kehlani, the way he should’ve.
“I stood you up, that was my bad
Gave me your heart, watch me break that” – SAVAGE ANTHEM
And in the same interview with Billboard that I previously mentioned, he talked about how whenever he gets in a relationship that the music naturally becomes secondary in his life. And when asked about if the women he deals with know that he’s going to make music about them after they split up, he replied, “I think everyone knows that.”
So what do you get when you combine the music of an introvert who deeply expresses his feelings about failed relationships over 40 beats? You get the one and only… Partynextdoor. And especially with this album, it was a party that you couldn’t miss.

The album starts off with the “usual” Party, as he’s talking about wanting to get intimate with a girl. But this album is much deeper than that. I want to talk about something that I’ve noticed as a big fan of Party’s music.
The topic of toxicity within the music industry is spoken about a whole lot. And the artists who display it best are Future, Drake, Brent Faiyaz and Party. And Party took it to a whole other level on this album.
First, it starts with the skit that ends the track “F o r C e r t a i n”. Party is out with presumably his girl and she asks him what he’s about to do after she said she’s going home. He then proceeds to tell her that he wants to “hit a few more spots”. In what I’m assuming is a stunned response, she replies with “Okay, I guess I’ll see you when you get home“.
And now it’s time to highlight the song that I really want to talk about. And that is “S o r r y, B u t I’ m O u t s i d e“.
As we transition right into, “S o r r y, B u t I’ m O u t s i d e” Party INSTANTLY acknowledges and apologizes for his decision to continue the night out without his girl.
“I shouldn’t even be outside
I got somebody inside waitin’ on me”
And that’s not the only part in this song that stands out to me. As a matter of fact, it’s the two lines that follow the previous ones that I just quoted.
“And I’m playin’ with their emotions, motions (Motions)
Sorry, but I’m outside tonight”
With Party’s music, compared to the others mentioned previously, the toxicity takes on a different tone. It almost seems as if he knows what he’s doing is wrong, but he won’t even consider listening to that voice in his head. Instead, he just continues to do what he wants anyway. Not caring or even thinking about any possible consequences.
Which leads to the conversation had at the end of the song between Party and his girl. She proceeds to tell him that he’s wasting her time and that he’s not taking her seriously. She then goes on to say that they both aren’t getting any younger and they need to get real quick.
Now you might be thinking, “maybe he’ll actually change his mind after hearing that and try to change his ways.” And while that might be the way it should go in real life, this is Party we are talking about. And this man is on toxic timing 24/7.
Throughout this whole period of his girl questioning him, his responses are full of “what are you talking about?” and “what are you tryna say?”
And the nail in the coffin is the ULTIMATE toxic line. Like when I heard this I started to laugh because of how audacious it was.
“Are you, are you talking to someone else?”
This man constantly acknowledged his wrongdoings throughout the song and then when she actually called him out on it, he acted like he didn’t know what she was saying and then immediately accused her of cheating. Absolutely hilarious.
And all of this chaos leads into the beautiful song which we now know as “R e a l W o m a n“. A song about sticking beside your girl and basically complementing her throughout the whole song.
Partynextdoor is a special, special artist. Whether it’s his songwriting ability for himself or others, you know that you’re going to get gold whenever he’s on a track. And that gold is sprinkled all over this album. A serious contender for my album of the year.
Just like I told y’all in the Bryson Tiller article, I am always grateful for the opportunity to share my thoughts on music with you guys. So once again, a well-deserved thank you to all that interact with these articles and actually read them because a lot of work goes into them.
This is YSN, until next time, signing out.
