If you look at my website you’ll see how much I love doing this. Just read some of my articles. There are several ones that start off with me saying, “I just got the inspiration randomly to write this” and it was 2 or 3 in the morning. What I especially love about music is discovering new artists. Now while they may not be “new” in the public eye, their catalog is new to me. So when I listen to a new album I just sit back and pay attention to the story that the artist is telling. That’s how I felt listening to “RY RY WORLD”.
The first time I ever heard of Mariah the Scientist was back in 2019 when she was signed to Tory Lanez’s label OneUmbrella. She was then featured on Trippie Redd’s “A Love Letter To You 4”, which was just the catalyst to an already great career.
“RY RY WORLD”, released on July 9th, 2021, was her second studio album. Throughout the album Mariah talks about what most 23 year-olds are dealing with. Struggles in relationships and self-identity. I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, your favorite music is what you either relate to or see yourself in. So there’s no doubt why she has such a big fanbase because she’s not the only one that has dealt with these problems.
The album is short, but concise. 10 tracks for 28 minutes is a quick and easy first impression for the listener. Just like I did with “KIKI” by Kiana Ledé, I listened to this project on my way back from work twice. And then two more times when I got home before writing this. Here’s what I thought about “RY RY WORLD”…
“The YSN Review”
- All For Me
- 2 You
- Walked In ft. Young Thug
- RIP
- Revenge
- Aura
- Brain
- Impalas & Air Force 1s
- Always n Forever ft. Lil Baby
- Maybe
Right away on “Impalas & Air Force 1s” Mariah is trying to figure out how to get the attention of the person she is interested in. She is questioning herself and wanting to be someone else.
“Who’s your favorite girl? I wish I could be her”
On the next track “Aura”, she is trying her best to show her lover that she is the best option for him. Even though she thinks that he hates her, she still wants to overcome any obstacle to be his. She goes on to say, “Know you hate me, but I still love you. And if it’s up to me, there’s no discussin’ this.”
Despite her desperation to be wanted and needed by him, she still knows that there is fragility in the beginning stages of a relationship and a certain trust/bond needs to be formed first before anything.
“But when it comes to trust, ain’t no rush in it”
The next four songs was one of those runs on an album where you find yourself listening and just liking every track. On “Walked In” both Mariah and Thug just matched with the production and overall vibe on the track perfectly. You could feel the chemistry that they had on the song, which makes sense because they are dating in real life.
One thing that stood out to me on this project besides Mariah’s great signing ability was the production. A standout example of that would be, “RIP”. Listening to the song you can just picture her driving angrily and full of emotion on a late Miami night. As she says early on in the track, “‘Cause I’m speeding on my way home from Eleven,” referencing the famous Miami nightclub. She is angry because she has finally came to the realization that no matter what she does, she just won’t be enough for this specific person.
“And if I told you, “The world is yours”. You’d just wanna go to Mars”
Like I said earlier about listening to new projects, you just have to sit down and listen to them tell their own story. So let’s take a look back at how “RY RY WORLD” started and then how it ended. On the first couple of songs she is talking about how she wants to be the one for this man, no matter the cost.
“I can be what you need, maybe more, everything”
However as we go through the album, Mariah is taking us through her own personal journey of how she wanted to be desired by this person to then being played. On “2 You” she talks about reminiscing on the “beautiful” moments they had together, but looking at the grave she dug herself following the aftermath.
“But look at what we made. Sure was beautiful. Now I lay it in a grave. Now I’m all covered in dirt”
And then five songs later, on the outro, it’s all about Mariah’s “Revenge”. I don’t know if this has been said/proven by anyone, but I think that the cover perfectly represents how the album went. She is shot with an arrow, with it pointing away from her body (suggesting that she got shot in the back = backstabbed). But even though she’s bleeding after the heartbreak, she’s seen smiling. And I think she’s smiling because she knows she’s going to get the revenge she desires.
“You know nothing’s as sweet as revenge”
Just like “KIKI”, this album will also stay saved on my phone. Mariah the Scientist is an extremely talented artist, but you knew that already. Recently she went on tour with Rod Wave, don’t be surprised if you see her headlining her own sold out tour soon.
Killer instinct on any track, effortless singing ability, revenge on her mind and innovation with every new project… Mariah the Scientist is here to stay.
